HOVESKELAND RESIDENCE
The Hoveskeland residence in Annandale, Virginia got a "high
design" face lift this past year. The owners were looking for something
new, different from the usual suburban ranch house. With ideas of entertaining,
the owners needed a larger kitchen with a breakfast area, and a larger
dining area to accomodate groups. Their Suburban Ranch style house was
beginning to feel out-of-date and needed more light and space to accomodate
to the modern styles. Therefor their Entry Foyer was expanded into a
fine and airy formal entrance. A lower level was expanded and improved
to the clients needs, and was built to fit neatly under their garage/car
port.
A new pavillion was built in the side of the house and was joined to the back
deck via a new wooden bridge. This served as a nice spot for insect-free outdoor
entertaining. The new pavillion has a flexible space through use of the full
glass overhead garage doors. The garage is extendable enough to store the family's
sailing dingy.
The house's eyebrow clerestories provide daylight to the center of the house
through its frosted glass. This baths the interior with natural sunlight, and
links the interior to the outdoors with this architectural alternative to skylights.
